Temptation- Is it a sin?
Most people believe that if you are tempted, you might as well go ahead and do whatever you have been tempted to do because just being tempted makes you already guilty.
That is as far from the truth as the east is from the west, but do not take my word for it, I could be wrong, but God never makes a mistake.
Let us delve into the Word of God and see what God said about it and YOU decide the truth of the matter.
I have always had trouble understanding the theory behind telling a person who is fighting an addiction, just to use that as an example; that if you are tempted to use drugs, you might as well go ahead and do it because you are already guilty.
Now, I know people do not do that, just using it for an example, but it is a very good one.
When people believe that if a person is tempted, they are already guilty, I would love to know what sin have they actually committed?
If a person should lose his temper and consider taking another person’s life due to anger for only a moment, but then better judgment kicks in and he settles down and makes it right with the lord, is he guilty of murder?
If just being tempted makes you guilty, then that person would need to be tried for murder, would they not?
Silly? Of course, it is!
It is just as ridiculous as believing that if you are tempted, you are already guilty.
Suppose you were temped to jump off a cliff, you would be in bad shape if your belief were actually true, you would dead before you even jumped, because you were tempted to do it.
My goodness, folks, I know you can see that is one belief that does not even make good sense, to begin with.
Jas 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
God will NOT tempt you to do evil, and another thing, most people want to blame the wrong they do on God or the Devil, but listen to what the book of James said.
James is completely denying the claim that God tempts a person to do evil, and that he would NEVER tempt them to do evil. (Neither tempteth he any man)
They also blame the Devil for their OWN wrongdoing; let us see about that, as well.
Jas 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
Notice here, it is NOT the Devil’s lust that causes you to do wrong, it’s that little Devil that stares back at you out of the mirror (Your own lust, he called it) when you shave or brush your teeth, not calling you a Devil, just making a point.
If the Devil could actually make you do anything, you couldn’t even go to church, he would NOT let you, now would he?
Well, Preacher, you might ask, why would you make a statement like that? Read this next place.
1Jn 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
Are you a child of God? Do you have God and the Holy Ghost abiding in you?
Well, he said that both God and the Holy Ghost (which abides in you) were greater than he (Satan) that is in the world.
When you say, “The Devil made me do it,” you are making a very dangerous statement; because that is actually saying that the Devil has such control over you, that you are helpless to escape his clutches, and that would make you a full-fledged Child Of The Devil!
Are you sure that is the message that you wish to convey to the world, or do you believe that you can receive strength from God to overcome sin and temptation?
What we need to do is; IF we DO sin, just admit that you were wrong, ask the Lord to forgive you, having a determination that you will not be caught in that condition anymore, and he said he was faithful and Just to forgive us our sins.
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
The Bible said that if you confess your sins, (The first thing you must do) he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, AND to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness.
What is Sin?
1 John 5:17
1 John 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
Now, God said “All unrighteousness IS SIN, so what about making a mistake?
Here is the way s God defines SIN:
Jas 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
If you know better, and go ahead and do it anyway, God said it is SIN.
So, what happens when and IF you sin, you fall out of favor with God, UNLESS you confess your sins and then, NOT go back and do it anymore.
Jas 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
“When Lust is conceived, it bringeth forth sin”.Just what does this mean?
I used to be an alcoholic, but that bottle of Vodka never made me drunk, unless I first reached out and picked it up and drank it.
Here’s the thing, though; when I bought that bottle, It didn’t make me drunk, but that Lust for that alcohol was conceived in my mind; (in other words, I’d made up my mind, so it was conceived in my mind) but I STILL was NOT guilty of being drunk, but what if I went ahead and drank it?
“Sin when it is finished. (I have committed a sin because I KNEW it was wrong.) What happens then? “it bringeth forth death!”
That is Spiritual Death, you fall out of favor with God, but that still does not make you a Child of the Devil.
Here’s when you actually become a Child of the Devil, if you don’t heed the call of God; as he keeps reaching out to you, trying to bring you back to him; he will keep on working with you until he becomes weary of reaching for you, then the following verses would apply to you.
2 Thessalonians 2:10-12
2Th 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
Do YOU have the love of the truth abiding in you? As long as you love the truth, you are nota child of the Devil, but what if you deny the call of God so long that he wearies of reaching out to you, seeking to free you from the clutches of Satan?
Look at the next verse.
2Th 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
Because they turned down God for too long. What happens, then? “God shall send them strong delusion,”that’s having the truth watered or diluted down with a lie, until it is NO longer the truth.
Now, watch this!“That they should believe a lie:”
Will YOU listen to the lies that will cause YOU to be lost? “Oh just go ahead and take a drink, it will not hurt anything as long as you do not get drunk,” they will tell you, won’t they.
What happens if you listen to those lies?
2Th 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
If you believe those lies, and deny God’s Word, “That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”
What happens if you love the unrighteousness, lies, and the habits more than you love God? “That they all might be damned.”
Who will be damned? The people who “had pleasure in unrighteousness”
I pray that is not you, folks.
1 Corinthians 10:13
1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
God said, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: “So anything you are tempted to do, it isn’t anything new, people have been suffering being tempted ever since the Garden of Eden.
Now, you might think there is no way you can overcome temptation, but listen to this. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man”
Now, watch where your strength will come from; “but God isfaithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able”watch your remedy to overcome it. “But will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
Folks, that is what God said; that he will make a way for you to bear it. Now, let us see where that help comes from.
Heb 2:18 For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
People say being tempted makes you guilty because you have already sinned, but I deny that, and the word of God denies it.
If being tempted makes you a sinner, then Jesus was the greatest sinner of all, but we know Jesus did no sin because the above verse plainly says that he (Jesus) suffered being tempted.
So according to their beliefs, Jesus would have had to be the greatest sinner of all, but we know better, don’t we?
Why did Jesus suffer being tempted? “he is able to succour them that are tempted,”
In other words, Jesus suffered being tempted so that he could understand what you are going through, so that he could help you overcome it, but the point is, Jesus was tempted, and it does not make you a sinner just because you are tempted.
When you overcome it through the help from Jesus, it makes you an overcomer; you are a winner, does that not make you feel better?
Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Folks, do you know what this is saying?
We do not have a high priest that cannot be touched by the feelings of our infirmities, no, Jesus suffers when you suffer, and he knows what you are going through.
He knows what you are going through because HE had to overcome temptation himself; therefore, He knows how to make you an overcomer, as well.
You might believe Jesus does not know what you have to go through, but “he was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
Jesus suffered and overcame temptation so that you would know that you could follow his example and become an overcomer.
You see, if being tempted makes you guilty, then Jesus was the biggest sinner of all, but you and I both know better than that. It said he did no sin.
Mat 13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
Can you see what this book is saying? Can you hear his voice as it rings out over this hell bound world, calling honest, men and women, boys and girls out of the bondage of sin, and leading you into the paths of righteousness, freeing you so you can serve God freely.
Isa 4:5 And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.
Isa 4:6 And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain.
Are YOU looking for that place of refuge, that place of safety?
Psa 61:3 For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.
Run to God, let HIM shelter you from the enemy. He will be a strong tower for you during your times of trouble.
Pro 18:10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
Will You run to Jesus and be safe? He is that strong tower, a place of safety in time of trouble. When the temptations come, do not wait until you are overcome, run to Jesus and let him help you fight your battles
Jer 17:8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
If you will run to Jesus, you can be like the above verses said. Will you heed the call and allow the lord to help you win your battles and overcome temptations?
You can be like that tree, having your roots spread out by the river, planted and your roots going down deep to give you strength in time of trouble, you can bend with the wind and your roots will go deep.
Jas 1:11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
When the burning heat of temptation arises, the Grace of God will give YOU strength to stand, but notice this, “the rich man fade away in his ways.”
The rich man will continue on in his wicked ways, and that will cause him to fade away. Pitiful, isn’t it?
Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
Did you hear that? You are a blessed person if you endure (overcome) temptation, but they say you are a sinner if you’re tempted.
I’m gonna take God’s word and believe I’m a blessed man because I get tempted because then, I have the ability to overcome it and I will receive a crown of life through the help and grace of God
Jas 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
No, God won’t tempt you to do evil, but he loves to show his power by giving you the strength to overcome temptation.
Rev 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
Jesus said HE would keep you, (Give you strength to fight in your hour of temptation,) and he said all the world would go through the same thing, didn’t he?
Act 20:19 Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:
Did you hear that? You actually serve the Lord with your humility of mind, your tears, and your temptations.
Don’t beat yourself up because you are tempted to do wrong, you prove yourself worthy to inherit eternal life by overcoming temptation, the book calls it “being tried,” what else do you think that means? It means what it says, doesn’t it, folks?
1 Pet 2:21-22
1Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
Let us analyze these next two verses. Notice, Christ suffered (being tempted) for us, leaving us an example, that we should FOLLOW his steps.
When you are tempted, you are walking in his footsteps, that is, if YOU overcome the temptation the same way Jesus did.
What is that example, lord?
1Peter 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth
Now, the Bible said Jesus did NO sin, yet he WAS tempted.
You can be an overcomer, as well, if you let Jesus lead you into the battle and help you fight the battles.
If you give in to the temptation, you become guilty before God; so do not be in that crowd, let’s fight to win the war against sin.
How can you be an overcomer, unless you have overcome something for Christ?
Folks, this old man has no other motive than to see you make it to Heaven, what other reason could I possibly have since I’m not receiving any money, or any other gratuity, except to walk the streets of gold with each and every one of you.
Please pray for this old man,
